GRADUATION PROJECT - ONU

The name of this project is "ONU" (隱) which is the pronunciation of the word "Hidden" in Japanese. It is also where the word "ONI" (鬼) (ghost) came from. It is been described as "The hidden part of Japan."

In Japan, there are legends believe that there are spirits and monsters residing in the mountains, lurking deep within the seas and slumbering in the ancient shrines that dot the islands of the enigmatic archipelago.

The traditions and beliefs have been carried on till live today. Those elaborate costumes at festivals and rituals to mark the changing of the seasons and those dances in the ceremonies which strike fears of the monsters have brought profound influence to this collection.

The inspiration for the project came from relevant sources including all kinds of primary and secondary research on those rituals, ceremonies, and legends. The Yokai (monster in Japanese) culture has been adopted to Japanese movies, art, literature, manga, costume, design and so on...It originated from people's fear of the unknown and old and discarded objects. They believe that everything has its own spirit and energy which could be classified as Animism (the religious belief that objects, places, and creatures all possess a distinct spiritual essence). This is one of the critical concepts of this project.
